US/Mountain

Join us for the 4th Mountains for Active Diabetics Conference!

This year we’ll be just outside Bozeman, Montana, USA, staying at the historic Hyalite Youth Camp.  This beautiful, woodsy location was used for years as a Diabetic Camp for young kids getting away from home for their first time.  Here they learned how to test their blood sugar, inject insulin and treat hypos in a “remote” setting away from their parents, thereby taking their diabetes to a higher level.

We’ll be doing a similar thing but we’re adding some serious inspiration to the equation.  Our guest speakers will include:

Nikki Wallis - Friday night
Nikki is 36yrs old and comes from Llanberis in North Wales (UK). She works as a National Park Warden for the Snowdonia National Park. In her spare time she trains search and rescue dogs for SARDA Wales and is an active member of the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team. Nikki has been climbing for 22 years and has climbed many mid grade rock and snow routes all over the world – USA (Yosemite Valley – Regular Route, Central Pillar of Frenzy, North Buttress, Higher Cathedral Spire); Colorado (many 4000m peaks) European Alps (Wetterhorner, North Wall of the Kingspitze, West Face of the Rosenlauistock, Allalinhorn); Dolomites; Verdon – as well as extensive rock and snow/ice climbing in her native home of Wales.

She belongs to the Swiss Alpine Club (British Section) and the Alpine Club of London. Nikki has been Type 1 since 1994 at which point she became dedicated to furthering her understanding of managing diabetes in remote, physically demanding mountain situations and providing a forum for others to share this knowledge via Mountains for Active Diabetics. Nikki in 2005 was awarded the DESA Lifescan Athletic Achievement award in Philadelphia, and was runner up for the Diabetes UK HG Wells “Commitment to Diabetes” award in London that same year. She is a lecturer for the UIAA Mountain Medicine Diploma course on “Active Diabetes.” Working in, being among and climbing mountains is a lifelong passion that remains her motivation and inspiration for excellent metabolic control of her diabetes. Nikki currently uses an Accu Chek Spirit insulin pump (since 2000) and these blood glucose meters: Accu Chek Active, Accu Chek Aviva, Bayer Ascensia Contour and Elite XL.

Sebastian White - Friday night  A nurse practitioner with board certification in family practice and advanced diabetes management, Sebastian works at Bozeman Deaconess Health Group’s Internal Medicine Associates and the medical staff at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital. He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science in Nursing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His nurse practitioner training focused on diabetes management in outpatient and inpatient settings and included clinical residencies at Duke University’s Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes as well as University of North Carolina’s Diabetes Management Center. He also trained in internal medicine and family practice.

Sebastian recently moved to Bozeman after working at the Billings Clinic, where he has been a member of the Department of Internal Medicine and the Diabetes Management Team. He, along with Dr. Michael Vlases of Internal Medicine Associates, will work on the development of the Bozeman Diabetes Center which will provide comprehensive diabetes management services for the community.

Mauro Sormani - Saturday night
Mauro lives in a small village near Como (North Italy). He has been a Type 1 diabetic since 1985 and an insulin pumper since October 2000. Mauro is a world class cross country skier, climber and all-around athlete. In 1995 Mauro joined the Italian diabetes and exercise association (A.N.I.A.D) and has taken part in numerous Italian diabetic running championships (organized by ANIAD) with many wins. In 2006 Mauro’s took a third place podium finish in the world’s most gruelling cross-country ski competition: the Arctic Circle Race. Mauro has many top finishes in elite-caliber cross-country ski marathon events. Since 2002, Mauro’s high-level rock climbing and high-altitude mountaineering have impressed alpinists worldwide. He has reached the top of many 4000-meter peaks in the Alps via demanding routes with many ski descents to his credit. In 2002 after summiting Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mauro reached 7550 meters on Cho Oyu without supplementary oxygen or high altitude porters with the ADIQ expedition (www.adiq.org). Already in 2007, Mauro has completed rock climbs and opened new routes at the world’s highest levels.
What also sets Mauro apart from other elite athletes is his ability to discuss specific training programs and his diabetes management techniques for competition. After each of Mauro's big races, he has published detailed accounts of his diabetes management decisions, blood sugar values, choice of foods and specific adjustments made to his insulin pump basal profiles. This information has been very helpful in providing detailed athlete-specific information to other active diabetics and has allowed him to show newly diagnosed diabetics, young and old, that they need not let diabetes interfere with an active life. Mauro has produced two DVDs: one documenting his amazing success in the 2006 Arctic Circle Race (to be debuted at MADiDEA 2007); his second, produced with diabetic mentor Vittorio Casiraghi in 2005, documenting Mauro’s ski ascent/descent of Pik Lenin called “Flying at 7000 meters.” Mauro was a well-received presenter at MADiDEA 2004, in Vallouise, France.

Herbert Hausmann - Sunday night
Herbert was diagnosed with diabetes in 1964 and has been called Mr. Inspiration by everyone who knows him. At MADiDEA 2007 he will provide an historical overview of the development of diabetes management and its changing implications for diabetics to pursue active outdoor sports. Herbert will weave his exhilarating story from personal experience as a young climber and skier evolving into a marathon and ultra marathon runner. Herbert is an Emeritus of Mathematics from the University of Würzburg, Germany and has led and organized numerous hikes and multi-day treks with fellow diabetics and their families, most recently in the Ecrins Mountains of France. He is a long-time supporter of the German and US branches of the Diabetes Exercise and Sports Association.
