Another Type 1 summit on Cho Oyu

Geri Winkler along with others from Alpine Ascents reached the summit of Cho Oyu yesterday.   Looks like Geri succeeded in doing it without supplemental O2.

Cho Oyu Team Summits!
September 30, 2009

We just received word from Michael Horst (Expedition Leader) that our team has made the summit of Cho Oyu and is now back at Camp 2 resting. Everyone is doing fine, and the group will descend to base camp tomorrow. We want to congratulate our climbers John Burns, Vanessa Folkerts, Michael Girard, Martin Grieder, Geri Winkler, Jan Smith, along with guides Michael Horst & Lakpa Rita Sherpa, and the climbing Sherpa team of Tshering Dorjee Sherpa, Kami Rita Sherpa, Fur Kancha Sherpa, Passang Rita Sherpa. Michael reported fantastic weather conditions on summit day, and the weather is forecasted to hold during their descent to base camp.

Yes, it is true that I reached the summit of Cho Oyu on Sept 30, but I used oxygen from Camp III (7550m) to the summit and back.
It was my target to do the climb without supplemental oxygen but I became sick during the acclinatization period (severe stomach problems) and didn't recover until our summit push. I hardly could keep pace with my climbing team. So, I had only the options to give up my summit bid or to try it with oxygen. I decided for the second option.
Best wishes
Geri

Thanks for the clarification and congratulations!  If you have any personal photos to post, we'd love to see any.

Cheers and welcome back home, dp

Thanks for the info Geri.  Anything else you could share re: pump vs. pens vs. syringes, avoiding hypos, your preference for emergency carbs, etc?
